On Friday 3 September 2010, global pop icon Robbie Williams returned to one of his favourite childhood holiday destinations to switch on the world-famous Blackpool Illuminations. The highly anticipated event drew thousands of spectators to the town’s iconic seafront, officially launching the annual display of lights that would run for a record 66 consecutive nights. The switch-on ceremony has long been a staple of the resort’s calendar, but Williams’ involvement that year added a particular buzz of excitement, thanks to his massive fanbase and his own nostalgic connection to the town. While Robbie did not perform on the night, his presence alone was enough to energise the crowds. Speaking to those gathered, he fondly recalled visiting Blackpool as a child, describing the town as a magical place full of charm and excitement. His appearance was seen not only as a celebration of his career but also as a nod to Blackpool’s enduring appeal as a family destination and its deep ties to British entertainment culture.
The evening was further elevated by a full-scale concert that accompanied the switch-on, with an impressive line-up of live performances from popular artists of the time. Opera tenor Russell Watson brought classical flair to the stage, while chart-toppers The Wanted and Olly Murs delivered high-energy pop sets. Gabriella Cilmi, known for her soulful voice, added a touch of international glamour, and Alesha Dixon brought charisma and rhythm with her blend of pop and R&B. Instrumental supergroup Bond and American rock band The Plain White T’s rounded out the diverse bill, ensuring something for everyone in the crowd. The event was broadcast to a national audience, reinforcing Blackpool’s image as a premier entertainment destination and reminding the public of the significance of the Illuminations, which have lit up the Fylde coast each autumn since 1879. Robbie Williams’ switch-on in 2010 remains one of the most memorable in recent years, combining star power, community spirit, and the timeless magic of Blackpool’s lights.
Five years prior to this visit to Blackpool, Robbie Williams came to the resort to make a video at The Belle Vue Pub on Whitegate Drive.
