Eddie Dunn, a 64-year-old father of four from Fleetwood, emerges from a major operation for oesophageal cancer with a determination to help others. A former student of Blackpool & the Fylde College and Salford University, he now channels his recovery into community work through the Kick Cancer’s Arse Support Group. Together with fellow members, he leads the creation of a cancer support garden in Bispham, intended as a peaceful refuge where patients can relax in a natural setting.

The site sits beside Kincraig Water, a private fishing pond off Kincraig Road where Eddie is an active angler. The fenced-off greenspace is being tidied, landscaped and planted with flowers, while outdoor furniture is installed to create a welcoming environment. As part of the project, cancer patients are offered free fishing on the pond, connecting wellbeing with gentle activity. Volunteers from KCA are working to complete the preparations in time for an open day on 28 June, which will include stalls and support from the local angling club.

Eddie recalls undergoing surgery at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital in October 2023, followed by chemotherapy. He received the all clear in April the following year, though he continues to undergo regular tests. He explains that the experience gave him an appreciation of how tough cancer treatment can be and a desire to give something back to others still facing the same challenges.

Fellow KCA member Lesley Caine, aged 48 and also from Fleetwood, describes her recovery from aggressive breast cancer. She explains that the group offers both practical and emotional support, whether through conversation, companionship or simply a shared cup of tea. The group sees itself as a source of connection for those who feel isolated during or after treatment.

KCA welcomes donations and support for the development of the Bispham garden. The group can be contacted directly on its support line or through its private Facebook page, which is open to new members.
