Councillor Lynn Williams, Leader of Blackpool Council, explains that Thursday 8 May 2025 will mark a significant milestone for the town as it commemorates the 80th anniversary of VE Day. She describes it as a very special day, one that brings the community together to remember the moment in 1945 when victory in Europe was declared and the Second World War in Europe came to an end.
Across Blackpool, a full programme of commemorative activity is being arranged. Community groups prepare events in local halls and open spaces, while schools plan lessons, performances and displays to engage young people with the history and significance of the day. Neighbourhoods organise traditional street parties, echoing the scenes of celebration that filled the town in 1945. Bunting, music and shared food will create a spirit of togetherness, blending remembrance with festivity.
The Council positions the 80th anniversary as not only a tribute to those who lived through the war, but also as an opportunity to reflect on the values of resilience and community that continue to shape Blackpool. By encouraging involvement at every level, from schoolchildren to older residents, the town ensures that the legacy of VE Day remains alive for future generations.
