Now trading as Moorland Tennis Club, the organisation was originally incorporated as Moorland Sports Club Limited in Poulton-le-Fylde in 1946. Its formal opening took place four years later, in 1950, an event that drew considerable local attention and celebrity guests. Among those present were the celebrated entertainer Tessie O’Shea, who lived nearby on Breck Road, and the comic actor Terry-Thomas, both of whom reflected the area’s post-war enthusiasm for sport and recreation.
Situated adjacent to the YMCA sports complex and golf club, Moorland has evolved steadily over the decades into one of the Fylde Coast’s leading tennis venues. Successive phases of investment and modernisation have transformed the facilities, most notably through a £500,000 improvement scheme that provided a new clubhouse, resurfaced courts, and floodlighting to enable year-round play. Members now enjoy a choice of carpet, astroturf, and hard courts, allowing the club to host a range of league and social tennis throughout the seasons.
Today, Moorland Tennis Club competes actively in regional competitions, fielding men’s and ladies’ teams in the Fylde and Ribble Leagues, as well as junior and mixed teams in summer and autumn fixtures. The club offers a full programme of organised play, including junior sessions on Tuesdays from 5 to 6 p.m., adult club nights on Tuesdays from 6 to 8 p.m., and social tennis on Sunday mornings. In the summer months, team practices take place on Monday evenings for ladies, Wednesday for mixed players, and Friday for men.
Coaching is provided under the direction of head coach Jonathan Churchman, an LTA-registered professional, who oversees a comprehensive year-round development scheme for players of all ages and abilities.
The modern clubhouse, complete with bar and kitchen, serves as a social hub for members and is also available for private function hire at reduced rates for club members. Enquiries may be directed to Aryssa Wiseman on 07947 101973 or by email at functionsatmtc@gmail.com.
From its foundation in the optimistic years following the Second World War to its present status as a thriving community sports centre, Moorland Tennis Club has remained a defining feature of Poulton’s recreational life—a symbol of continuity, camaraderie and local pride on the Fylde Coast.
