Squires Gate Football Club, based in Squires Gate, Blackpool, was formed in 1948. The team began as Squires Gate British Legion, playing in the Blackpool & District Amateur League, where they won the Rawling Shield in their first season. In 1953 the club adopted the name Squires Gate F.C. and went on to win league titles in the mid-1950s, along with several cup competitions. After a season in the Fylde District League, where they also won the Fylde Cup, they moved into the West Lancashire League in 1961.

For the next thirty years they remained in that competition, playing mostly in Division Two before finally securing promotion in 1981 as champions. They also claimed the Richardson Cup in 1987. In 1991 the club was elected into the North West Counties Football League Division Two. They gained recognition with the Fair Play Award in 1994 and lifted the Division Two Trophy in 2002. A year later they earned promotion to Division One, later reaching their highest league placing in 2006 and making it to the FA Vase quarter-finals.

One of their most memorable occasions came in 2007 when they faced FC United of Manchester at Curzon Ashton in front of 1,650 fans, bringing in around £7,000. The club renamed its ground The Royal British Legion Stadium in 2012. Notable players also came through during this period: Jack Sowerby signed for Fleetwood Town in 2014 before moving to Northampton Town, while Josh Kay later joined Barnsley and now plays for Barrow AFC. In 2015, manager Dave McCann led Squires Gate to sixth place in the Premier Division, their highest finish, before stepping down and being replaced by captain Daniel Penswick, who kept the club in the division the following year.

In 2019 Luke Evans took over as manager, guiding the team to ninth before the season was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The club continues to play at The Skiddle Community Stadium, which has a clubhouse and floodlights. The ground saw its record attendance of 1,000 in 2024 against Bury FC and underwent further improvements in 2025, including a new entrance and refurbished catering facilities.
