Englebert Humperdinck at Blackpool Airport

In July 1968, Engelbert Humperdinck arrived at Blackpool Airport in his new Rolls Royce, preparing for his summer season performance at the ABC Blackpool. Reflecting on his previous appearance in the town, he said: “I am absolutely thrilled to be coming to Blackpool again. Back in 1968 I had such a great time appearing there in summer season and it proved to be a very successful show, breaking all-known box office records.” He went on to praise Blackpool as a “shining beacon” for entertainment in Britain, adding, “It will be nice to be part of that once more.”

Having recently toured the United States, Canada, Russia, South America, Australia, and New Zealand, Engelbert still felt that there was no place like home. “I am delighted to be back home and very happy to be touring Britain. I can’t wait, and I am so pleased it will give so many of my fans the opportunity to see my new stage show right here on home soil.”

To coincide with his UK tour, Universal Records was releasing his new album, Wake Up With You. This followed the success of his previous release, Engelbert At His Very Best, which went gold within days of its March 2000 release and sold more than 300,000 copies. His video, Engelbert Live at the London Palladium, also reached number seven in the UK video chart. Hoping for similar success with his Blackpool performance, he said, “I’m delighted to be appearing at the Opera House again. The theatre has a fantastic reputation and track record – so many great stars have performed there in the past.”
