Fleetwood Pier

Fleetwood Pier, also known as Victoria Pier, was officially opened on Whit Monday in 1910, measuring just 492 feet (150 meters) in length, making it one of the shortest piers in the UK. Built at the tail end of the golden era of pier construction, it was the last pleasure pier to be constructed in the country. Over the years, the pier hosted a variety of attractions, including a cinema opened in 1942 and a pavilion added in 2011.

The pier’s history has been marked by several setbacks, the most significant being a devastating fire on 25 August 1952, which started in the cinema and caused severe damage to the structure. It wasn’t until 1958 that the pier fully reopened. Over the decades, it served multiple purposes, functioning as an amusement complex, bar, and dance hall. The Stefani family were the longest-serving owners of Fleetwood Pier, managing it from the 1960s until 2000, when the business went into liquidation. The pier was subsequently closed, but after being sold, it reopened in 2003 under new ownership, only to be shut again due to safety concerns.

In 2008, the pier suffered another devastating blow when it was gutted by fire in the early hours of 9 September. Firefighters from Lancashire Fire and Rescue responded quickly, but the blaze caused irreparable damage, and by 26 September, Wyre Borough Council announced that the pier would be demolished for safety reasons. Despite initial plans to rebuild, the council confirmed in October 2008 that the pier would not be reconstructed. Instead, proposals were made to redevelop the site, and in 2017, plans were approved for a smaller-scale development featuring 15 apartments for over-55s and retail units, a far cry from the original ambitious plans for 85 apartments.

Today, Fleetwood Pier’s once-vibrant legacy is a memory, as the site waits for redevelopment. Despite the loss of one of Fleetwood’s most iconic structures, the pier’s history continues to be remembered by those who visited its amusements, danced in its halls, and watched films under its roof.
