Sir Andrew Palmley Served as Lord Mayor of London

Sir Andrew Charles Parmley, KStJ, born on 17 October 1956 in Blackpool, is a distinguished British educator, musician, and public servant. He is currently the Principal of the Harrodian School in Barnes, London, and is perhaps best known for his tenure as the Lord Mayor of London from 2016 to 2017. The third of three sons, Parmley was educated at Blackpool Grammar School, which has since become Salvation Army Citadel, is where Parmley developed an early passion for music. He began playing the organ at a young age and achieved significant early success, passing the Associate of the Royal College of Organists (ARCO) exam at just 16 and the Fellowship of the Royal College of Organists (FRCO) at 18. Parmley went on to study music at prestigious institutions, earning a scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music and later pursuing a Master’s degree at Manchester University. His academic journey continued at Royal Holloway College, London, and Jesus College, Cambridge, deepening his expertise in music and education. His professional career in music education included positions as Director of Music at Forest School, South Hampstead High School, and Grey Coat Hospital in Westminster. These roles helped establish him as a prominent figure in British music education before becoming the Principal of Harrodian School.

In addition to his leadership in education, Parmley has made significant contributions to the broader musical community. Since 2018, he has served as Director of the Royal College of Organists. His commitment to civic life is equally notable; he was first elected as a Common Councilman for the Ward of Vintry in 1992, later becoming Alderman of the City of London in 2001. Parmley has also held leadership roles within several City of London livery companies, including serving as Past Master of the Musicians’ Company, Parish Clerks, and Glass-Sellers. Parmley has been honoured for his services to music, education, and civic engagement. In 2016, he was knighted as a Knight of the Most Venerable Order of St John, and in 2018, he was further honoured with the title of Knight Bachelor. In 1980, he married Lady Wendy Parmley, a Past Master Information Technologist. Sir Andrew Parmley’s career is a testament to his dedication to music, education, and public service, making him a respected figure in both the cultural and civic landscapes of the UK.
