On 3 September 2004, former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell took centre stage in Blackpool to perform before activating the Blackpool Illuminations in a grand celebration of their 125th anniversary. This milestone year, dubbed “125 Electric Light Years,” paid homage to the enduring legacy of this iconic annual event. Geri was joined on stage by an array of star performers, including chart-topping boy band McFly, Fame Academy sensation Lemar, former Savage Garden frontman Darren Hayes, 1980s hitmakers Swing Out Sister, and the cast of Boogie Nights, featuring entertainers Jimmy Osmond and Billy Pearce. The event was a dazzling spectacle hosted by BBC Radio Two and fronted by presenter Mark Radcliffe, broadcasting live from Blackpool’s famous seafront. A specially constructed arena opposite Coral Island accommodated over 15,000 enthusiastic attendees who gathered to witness the now-legendary switch-on ceremony. The Illuminations were turned on in dramatic fashion, marking the beginning of their nightly shine from 3 September to 7 November, continuing their tradition of lighting up the promenade with breathtaking displays.
The 2004 celebration reaffirmed Blackpool Illuminations as a cultural phenomenon, blending historical significance with modern entertainment. Spanning nearly six miles, the Illuminations have become a symbol of the resort’s vibrancy, attracting visitors from across the globe. The 125th anniversary festivities showcased the event’s unique ability to merge nostalgic charm with contemporary pop culture, underscoring its status as one of Britain’s most beloved traditions.
