Armfield Academy, located on the site of the former Arnold School in Blackpool, opened its doors in September 2018 as part of the Fylde Coast Academy Trust (FCAT). The academy was named in honour of the late Jimmy Armfield CBE, the Blackpool FC legend, England captain, and former Arnold School pupil, whose name is synonymous with integrity, dedication, and leadership both on and off the field. The new school was created to replace the aging Arnold School buildings, providing state-of-the-art facilities and a modern learning environment for young people across the Fylde Coast.
The academy caters to students from nursery through to secondary level, reflecting its commitment to providing a seamless educational journey from early years to GCSEs. Its curriculum is built on FCAT’s core values of aspiration, resilience, and excellence, ensuring that pupils are supported both academically and personally. The school’s facilities include advanced classrooms, science labs, creative arts spaces, and extensive sports facilities—befitting its namesake’s strong connection to athletics and teamwork.
Armfield Academy continues the proud educational tradition established on the site more than a century ago, while embracing innovation and community spirit. With its blend of modern facilities, caring ethos, and deep local roots, the academy stands as a fitting tribute to Jimmy Armfield’s legacy—nurturing future generations to reach their full potential, both in the classroom and beyond.

Armfield Nursery Pre-School forms a vital part of the academy’s Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), welcoming children aged 3 to 5. The nursery offers 26 places, with flexible morning, afternoon, and full-day sessions to accommodate families:
-
Mornings: 8.45am – 11.45am
-
Afternoons: 12.15pm – 3.15pm
-
Full days: 8.45am – 3.15pm
The nursery’s curriculum is designed to encourage curiosity, confidence, and creativity, providing a safe and stimulating environment where children can learn through play and exploration. The learning experience is tailored to each child’s developmental stage, with staff setting personalised learning targets that nurture progress across key areas. Each half term, activities are planned around an overarching theme, connecting the children’s own experiences with new learning opportunities.
The EYFS curriculum at Armfield Academy focuses on three prime areas of learning—Communication and Language, Physical Development, and Personal, Social and Emotional Development—supported by the Characteristics of Effective Learning. These foundational skills prepare children for their educational journey, helping them develop language, coordination, independence, and positive relationships.
