Blackpool Dog Show

The Blackpool Dog Show began in 1921, with the first Championship show taking place in 1934 at the Tram sheds on Hornby Road. Since then, the event has typically been hosted at Stanley Park. The early years of the show saw Mr Harold Roberts serve as Secretary until 1974, followed by Mr Jack Bennett until 2003, when the current Secretary, Steve Hall, took over. In the photo below, Baby Peterjon steals the spotlight from Zodie, a Pyrenean Mountain Dog, during the Blackpool Dog Show on 2 June 1966. Zodie was owned by Freddie Garrity, of Freddie and the Dreamers. Peterjon Phillips, from Mold, Wales, was the baby featured, with his mother caring for the dog on Freddie’s behalf.

Inset photo: These alert sheepdogs, Nell (left) and Bell, were watching as keenly and critically as their master, David Dickson, of Hawick, Northumberland (centre), while rival dogs went through a test at the International Sheepdog trials at Blackpool. They could appreciate every move in the field and had the skill to separate two sheep from six, or to single out one sheep and coax it to their master. They were missing nothing except the thrill of being out there. Photo taken in September 1951.

Background image: This Bedlington terrier waded in as Jane Derbyshire, 9, of Sale, Cheshire sucked an ice-lolly at the dog show at Stanley Park. Jane is a great dog lover, so she did not object. The photo was taken in 1961.
