Blackpool Multiversity

Blackpool Multiversity is an ambitious project aimed at transforming higher education in Blackpool by creating a state-of-the-art, carbon-neutral campus in the town’s centre. Spearheaded by Blackpool and The Fylde College (B&FC), the Multiversity seeks to integrate digital and business education, skills development, and innovation to position Blackpool as a premier destination for higher education and training.

  • The campus will collaborate closely with businesses of all sizes, ensuring that the curriculum is co-created with employer partners to meet current and future workforce needs. This partnership aims to attract employers to the area by providing facilities for workforce upskilling. The Multiversity plans to offer flexible learning spaces equipped with modern technology, including simulators and augmented learning tools, to facilitate experiential and problem-based learning. A multidisciplinary approach will encourage creativity and innovation among students. By placing economic, social, and cultural development at its core, the Multiversity aims to drive regional transformation, supporting high-level skills growth and individual success. It is expected to attract a diverse range of students and employers from across the UK.
  • The project has secured significant funding, including £40 million from the Levelling Up Fund, contributing to the estimated £65 million total cost. The campus is slated to open by September 2027. However, the development has faced challenges, particularly concerning the acquisition of the proposed site. Blackpool Council has pursued a compulsory purchase order (CPO) for land between Cookson Street, Milbourne Street, George Street, and Grosvenor Street to clear the area for construction. A public inquiry into the CPO was held in November 2024, with some local businesses and residents expressing concerns about displacement and the adequacy of compensation. Despite these hurdles, the Multiversity is considered a “game-changer” for Blackpool’s regeneration efforts, with the potential to revitalise the town centre and provide new educational opportunities for the community. As the project progresses, it is expected to play a pivotal role in addressing socio-economic challenges in Blackpool, contributing to the town’s long-term development and prosperity.
