Joe Riley, born on 6 December 1996 in Blackpool, is an English professional footballer known for his versatility, playing as both a full-back and midfielder. Currently, he represents National League side AFC Fylde. Riley began his footballing journey at Manchester United, initially as a midfielder before being transitioned into a left-back role for the under-21 team.
Riley made his senior debut for Manchester United on 22 February 2016 in a 3–0 FA Cup victory against Shrewsbury Town, coming on as a substitute. Four days later, he earned his first start in a UEFA Europa League fixture against Midtjylland, where Marcus Rashford also made his debut. Although included in matchday squads throughout the season, these remained Riley’s only first-team appearances for the club.
In January 2017, Riley joined Sheffield United on loan in League One. However, his time was cut short after making just two appearances due to a training injury. He moved to Bradford City in May 2018 on a two-year contract but left in June 2020 following the expiration of his deal. Riley subsequently joined Carlisle United in August 2020 on a one-year contract, with an option for an additional year.
In June 2022, Riley signed a two-year contract with Walsall, effective from the expiration of his Carlisle deal. Following the conclusion of the 2023–24 season, he departed the club. Shortly thereafter, in June 2024, Riley agreed to join AFC Fylde on a one-year deal with the possibility of extending for another season. Riley’s career demonstrates his adaptability and determination across various levels of English football.
