Jonas Armstrong, born on January 1, 1981, in Dublin, Ireland, is an English actor who gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of the iconic character Robin Hood in the BBC series Robin Hood (2006–2009). After his family moved to Lytham St Annes at the age of six, Armstrong attended Arnold School before studying acting at RADA, where he graduated in 2003.
Armstrong’s feature film career began with Book of Blood (2009), a horror film based on a Clive Barker short story. He followed this with Twenty8k (2012), a British thriller, and then appeared in Edge of Tomorrow (2014), where he played Skinner in the action-packed science fiction film alongside Tom Cruise. Critics praised Armstrong’s performance, particularly in Walking with the Enemy (2014), where he portrayed a university student-turned-Nazi impersonator. His performance in this role was noted for its depth, capturing both the righteousness and inner conflict of his character.
In addition to his film work, Armstrong has been featured in several prominent television roles, including Troy: Fall of a City (2018), where he portrayed a Spartan king, and The Bay (2019), where he starred as Sean Meredith. He also had notable roles in The Drowning (2021), Hollington Drive (2021), and Floodlights (2022), where his portrayal of real-life convicted sex offender Barry Bennell was critically acclaimed for its chilling intensity. Armstrong’s other television roles include Ripper Street (2016), After the Flood (2024), and Coma (2024), in which he plays a complex, multi-dimensional character.
