Patrick Keiller – Robinson in Ruins photocall at the 67th Venice Film Festival, Vvenice Italy 04 September 2010.

Patrick Keiller is a filmmaker, writer, and lecturer, born in 1950 in Blackpool. He studied architecture at the Bartlett School of Architecture, University College London, before furthering his education at the Royal College of Art’s Department of Environmental Media as a postgraduate student in 1979. Over the years, he has combined academia with filmmaking, having taught architecture at the University of East London and fine art at Middlesex University.

Keiller’s early films include Stonebridge Park (1981), Norwood (1983), The End (1986), Valtos (1987), and The Clouds (1989). These works are characterised by their use of subjective camera techniques and voice-over narration, a stylistic approach he refined in his feature-length films London (1994) and Robinson in Space (1997). Both films are narrated by an unnamed character (voiced by Paul Scofield) who recounts his journeys with the unseen Robinson, a figure engaged in research on the socio-economic challenges of London in the first film and England as a whole in the second. These works are widely regarded as critiques of the UK’s economic policies under the Conservative governments of 1979–1997.

The trilogy concluded with Robinson in Ruins (2010), which emerged from The Future of Landscape and the Moving Image, a three-year research project. In this instalment, Vanessa Redgrave took over as the narrator, guiding the audience through a poetic and philosophical meditation on landscape, history, and politics. In 2000, Keiller completed The Dilapidated Dwelling, an exploration of the UK’s housing crisis. Although produced for television, the film was never broadcast. Featuring the voice of Tilda Swinton, it examines why housing in the UK remains outdated and unaffordable in an era of technological advancement. Keiller’s body of work continues to influence discussions on architecture, urbanism, and the socio-political forces that shape the built environment.
