The Backlot Cinema & Diner officially opened on 22nd March. Situated in the Houndshill Shopping Centre, it features a state-of-the-art entertainment complex, boasting Blackpool’s only IMAX screen. This screen, one of the largest in the North West at 10.85 meters high and 19.87 meters wide, uses IMAX with Laser technology to deliver a high-quality, immersive cinematic experience.
The cinema provides a diverse selection of films, ranging from the latest Hollywood releases to arthouse titles and special event screenings. In addition to movies, the venue hosts a variety of events, including corporate conferences, birthday parties, comedy nights, and live gaming tournaments.
The Backlot Cinema also includes a 100-seater diner that serves American-style food, such as burgers, hotdogs, wings, and a variety of desserts, including pancakes, sundaes, and milkshakes. This combination makes it an ideal destination for a complete entertainment and dining experience.
Councillor Mark Smith shared his thoughts ahead of the opening day. He expressed that they were extremely excited to announce the opening of the new cinema and diner on Friday, 22 March. He mentioned that they had been working hard to build a fantastic cinematic wonderland and were eager to welcome the Blackpool community to see what had been created. The Backlot, he noted, would bring an unmatched experience to the town, from the delicious diner and the big screen cinema to the exceptional event calendar and five-star service that would be a hallmark of every visit.
Economically, the project created over 100 direct jobs and approximately 260 construction jobs during its development. It was part of Blackpool’s broader regeneration efforts, funded by the Government’s COVID-19 Getting Building Fund and Blackpool Council. The cinema was expected to increase foot traffic and extend visitor stays into the evening, supporting local businesses and enhancing the town’s cultural offerings.
