Unveiling of the Comedy Carpet

Kenn Dodd opened the Comedy Carpet (see image below), a special artwork right on the seafront in front of Blackpool Tower. Created by artist Gordon Young and the design team at Why Not Associates, the Comedy Carpet is a visually striking and interactive tribute to British comedy. It took five years to complete and spans an area of approximately 2,200 square meters, covering a section of the pavement near the iconic Blackpool Tower. The artwork is made from durable granite and concrete, with over 160,000 individual letters used in various sizes and styles.

The Comedy Carpet is more than just a piece of art; it’s a celebration of British humour, showcasing jokes, songs, and catchphrases from more than 1,000 comedians and writers. It draws from the rich history of British comedy, spanning from classic music hall acts to contemporary comedians, making it a comprehensive representation of the country’s comedic evolution. Visitors are encouraged to walk on the carpet, reading the jokes and lines from some of their favourite comedians, offering a deeply interactive experience. The inclusion of well-known quotes and humorous references adds a sense of nostalgia and fun, reminding people of the comedic moments that have shaped British culture. Since its unveiling, the Comedy Carpet has quickly become one of Blackpool’s most popular attractions.
