Documents reveal that Adolf Hitler had plans for Blackpool and intended to use Blackpool Tower if he invaded Britain. Blackpool has been a popular seaside resort since the Victorian era, originally meant as a getaway for factory workers. Its popularity grew in the mid-20th century, attracting millions of visitors and famous performers. What’s less known is that Hitler was also interested in Blackpool.
As the leader of Nazi Germany, Hitler had detailed plans for Blackpool if he managed to conquer Britain. Although he bombed other British cities like London, Manchester, and Birmingham during the Blitz, he chose not to bomb Blackpool because he wanted to keep it intact. Blackpool was important during the war, with many Wellington bombers built there and many troops stationed in the city. Despite this, it was spared from German bombing raids.
Hitler planned to have his soldiers march along the coast after dropping paratroopers in Blackpool’s Stanley Park. He wanted to turn Blackpool into a place for his troops to relax. Documents show that Hitler liked Blackpool and even dreamed of putting a swastika flag on Blackpool Tower. He saw Blackpool as a perfect holiday spot for his soldiers, which is why it was spared, even though it was a key military site with many British troops.
