The Mount in Fleetwood, Lancashire, is a distinctive seafront pavilion standing on a large natural sand dune once known as Tup\u2019s Hill. Completed in 1902, the structure replaced an earlier pagoda designed by Decimus Burton, the architect responsible for the original 19th-century layout of Fleetwood. The Mount forms part of a seven-acre site between The Esplanade and Mount Road, overlooking the Irish Sea. Constructed of roughcast brick with tiled roofs, it is notable for its octagonal dome capped with a copper roof. The building has been Grade II listed since 1989 in recognition of its architectural and historic importance. The site played a significant role in Fleetwood\u2019s early development as a working port. Its prominent flagstaff was once used to send visual signals to ships entering and leaving the Wyre Estuary, while the pavilion itself served as a coastguard lookout. In 1886, an anemometer was installed on the building by the Meteorological Office to record wind speed and rainfall, with daily weather reports transmitted by telegraph to Greenwich.<\/p>\n

A clock memorial commemorating Fleetwood\u2019s fallen of the First World War was installed at the Mount in 1919, containing two bells that have sounded over the town for more than a century. During the flood of October 1927, which left the majority of Fleetwood under water, the Mount remained one of the few areas above the flood line. The retaining wall on its inland side was built from local pebbles, a traditional technique of the Fylde coast. From its vantage point, the Mount commands uninterrupted views across Morecambe Bay towards the Lakeland fells, a panorama described by author Bill Bryson as among the most beautiful in the world. Directly across The Esplanade stands the Marine Hall and Marine Gardens, opened in 1935 as Fleetwood\u2019s principal entertainment venue. In 1990, the upper floors of the Mount were converted into apartments, while the pavilion continues to serve as a landmark feature of Fleetwood\u2019s seafront landscape.<\/p>\n\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\"\n
