From her unforgettable performances in the Carry On films to her larger-than-life portrayal of Peggy Mitchell, the feisty landlady of the Queen Vic in EastEnders, Barbara captured the hearts of millions with her infectious energy and charm. Born Barbara Ann Deeks in London in 1937, she was the only child of John and Rose Deeks. In 1939, as World War II intensified, Barbara was evacuated to Blackpool for her safety, where she spent several years living in various homes. It was during this time in Blackpool that Barbara’s love for performing first took root. She attended a local dancing school, where her natural talent quickly became apparent. Her dance teacher once described Barbara as a “born show-off” who loved nothing more than being in the spotlight—an early sign of the star she would become.

Recognising her daughter’s potential, Barbara’s mother enrolled her at Madame Behenna’s Juvenile Jollities drama school. There, Barbara excelled, earning top marks in North London, which opened the door to more opportunities in the world of entertainment. Her skills as a performer led her to become one of the most recognised faces in British television and film. Barbara’s career reached new heights with her roles in the Carry On films, where her vivaciousness and comedic timing endeared her to audiences. But it was her portrayal of Peggy Mitchell in EastEnders that cemented her place as a true national treasure. For over two decades, she brought to life the tough yet tender pub landlady, becoming a central figure in the show’s history and one of British television’s most memorable characters.

Throughout her career, Barbara maintained a strong connection to Blackpool, where she returned in 1981 to star in two summer season shows at the North Pier Theatre and the Grand Theatre. Later, in 2016, she returned to the town to switch on Blackpool’s famous illuminations, a moment that was warmly celebrated by her fans. Barbara’s personal life was just as full of love as her professional one. In April 2000, she married Scott Mitchell, an actor and recruitment consultant, with whom she shared a strong and supportive partnership until her death in December 2020. Barbara’s legacy, marked by her talent, warmth, and indomitable spirit, continues to shine brightly, and her contributions to British entertainment will never be forgotten.

Barbara Windsor Actress Teams Up With Comic Bernard Bresslaw In Blackpool on 23 July 1992.

Dame Barbara Windsor was a beloved figure whose iconic roles spanned decades, making her a household name for generations of viewers.
