His childhood in Blackpool was marked by severe bullying for his homosexuality, which led to a mental breakdown at the age of 14. Hoyle&#8217;s artistic career began with performances in Blackpool, including at the <a href=\"https:\/\/dev.wearedeeperblue.co.uk\/history-clone\/the-belle-vue-pub-hotel-changes-its-image\/\"><strong>Belle Vue<\/strong><\/a> pub (where <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/dev.wearedeeperblue.co.uk\/history-clone\/robbie-williams-promo-video-at-belle-vue-pub\/\">Robbie Williams<\/a><\/strong> made a music video), where he developed comedic routines under the persona of Paul Munnery-Vain. After relocating to Manchester in the 1990s, he became a fixture in gay clubs and crafted &#8220;The Divine David,&#8221; an anti-drag queen persona blending biting social critique, surrealism, and raw vulnerability. The Divine David gained mainstream attention with appearances on the BBC&#8217;s <em>Comedy Nation<\/em> (1998) and two Channel 4 series, <em>The Divine David Presents<\/em> (1998) and <em>The Divine David Heals<\/em> (2000). Known for lacerating societal norms, his performances often intertwined dark humour and moments of self-recrimination. After a farewell performance, <em>The Divine David on Ice<\/em> at Streatham Ice Arena in 2000, Hoyle retreated from public life to grapple with personal mental health challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Hoyle&#8217;s return to television in 2005 saw him playing Doug Rocket in Channel 4&#8217;s sitcom <em>Nathan Barley<\/em>.
