Will Cribb has been living in Lytham for most of his life and decided to get Alan Whelan<\/strong><\/a> to help him write and publish his memoirs in 2015. This is his story: an idyllic childhood, his father\u2019s early death, a mother\u2019s indifference, a ten-year banishment by his stepfather to a boarding school thousands of miles away in the foothills of the Himalayas, and the shy boy\u2019s efforts to cope with the school\u2019s barefoot regime and tough bullies.<\/p>\n

However, this is no misery memoir. It is also about how the growing boy realises his dream of travelling to England \u2014 a country he has never visited \u2014 from where his great-grandfather sailed 100 years before. At the heart of the book is a young man\u2019s self-discovery that, despite his mother\u2019s coldness, he still has the capacity to love. Aged six, when banished by his stepfather to the boarding school, Will is unaware that he will not see his mother again for ten years. Later, free from the confines of school, the teenager turns to his long-held ambition to go \u2018home\u2019 to England. The arrival of a remarkable woman in his life is destined to change him forever.<\/p>\n

Telegram from Mandalay is a poignant memoir that vividly covers life in 1930s Burma, boarding school during the war years, the teeming factories of Bombay in the late 1940s, and Lancashire\u2019s historic textile mills through the 1950s & 1960s.
